So, if I already have a mat knot and a polygonal knot then do we need a mystic knot? Polygonal knots are such a distinct class (which conveniently intersects with the vast family of mystic knots) that I think it’s beneficial to show it in this context.
The good luck knot (吉祥結), a name coined by Lydia Chen who wrote the seminal book Chinese Knotting in both Chinese and English, is based on the crown knot. Usually the crown knot is tied in sequence to create a sinnet, a braid composed of knots. The best static (not animated) instructions I have found on the net for the crown sinnets are by The Boondoggle Man who, unfortunately, calls them the square stitch and the circle stitch.

I have these visions of graceful scrolls and curls, but things never seem to turn out that way. What I should be doing, of course, is cut the wire much longer and not be so concerned about waste (does anyone recycle/re-smelt copper bits like they do silver?) then this piece won't be too short and that one too long and the whole design not gel.
